Elastro: Yoshi, Synonym for Sound, Kari Watson / Katinka Kleijn Duo

Yoshi

Synonym for Sound

Watson & Kleijn Duo

This month’s Elastro features Yoshi, Synonym for Sound, and a Watson & Kleijn Duo. Yoshi (they/them) is a Chicago-based producer blending dusty samplers, warped synths, and beats that channel the city’s footwork legacy (DJ Rashad, Phuture) and the rebellious glitter of queer icons like Sophie, Charli XCX, and Honey Dijon. A non-binary artist with Mexican and Iraqi roots, their sound lives in the raw, genre-free space where DIY rave energy collides with intimate, off-kilter loops.

Synonym For Sound is a music project by filmmaker and visual artist Chris G. Abara, with an alternating line up of musicians and collaborators. Combining elements of ambient synth, syncopated drums and "world music" aesthetics, Abara released the groups Ambient Beat Tape on Bandcamp in late 2024. Utilizing outtakes from his short film entitled Mpoano (The shore) as well as found footage, Chris will perform a new soundtrack to the film with the help of Afro-Delic founder and multi-instrumentalist, Nguzo on guitar and keyboards.

Kari Watson and Katinka Kleijn bring together a wide range of sounds, merging acoustic, analog, and digital sound sources and exploring extended aspects of improvisation such as physicality, attunement, and embodiment. Combining cello, modular eurorack synthesizer, Max MSP, and handheld electronics, the two create tactile performance environments for their audiences.
